He became a student of Johann Baptist Zimmermann, who was a leading portrait painter in Bern, and later studied under Jacob Wider (1721–1794). Zimmermann specialized in portraits and history paintings, but also painted mythological scenes, landscapes and historical scenes from the Ancient world. He also created etchings of Swiss scenery. His patrons included the Bernese patrician families of Bürgfrid von Schellenberg, Baron Julian von Steiger, Count Rudolf von Keyserlingk, the Colloredos of Biel, the Bodmer family of Basel, the von Eckartsbergen family of Schaffhausen, the von Humboldt family of Berlin, the Supreme Court at Bern, the Armenian diaspora in Zurich and other notable figures of his time. He died in Weitezier in 1817 at age 58.
